Trained as a Graphic Designer at RISD and Carnegie-Mellon University, and being the son and grandson of printers, I have always had a love for ink on paper. The digital world is necessary, and I have worked successfully and extensively there, but design for print has always been my first love.

Whether the product is food, personal care or hand tools, good packaging is the largest and often times, last opportunity to influence a buyer. Two thirds of purchase decisions are made at the point of sale, with 85% of those sales being impulse. I think successful package design is a balanced synthesis of advertising and branding, often with a little product education tossed in.

Anniversary Blend paste wax - design.
Celebrating 25 years, Griot’s Garage offered this limited edition wax. A premium wax at a premium price, the wax is encased in a CNC sculpted aluminum “piston” container, which was packaged in a hand made box, containing a certificate of authenticity signed by Richard Griot. 250 units were made.

Redesign for a premium car wax. Offered in a custom embossed tin, the custom box was designed so that the product would stand upright on shelf, and would also contain an applicator pad.
FreeDent Refresh - illustration and design.
Package and logo design for a new sub-brand of FreeDent gum. Highly successful in the French market, this gum was targeted specifically to women.

Cover illustration for an internationally distributed scientific bulletin. The frog in the image was a newly discovered species, so the image’s accuracy was extremely important.

Design and illustration for a natural science museum. This art was used on gift packaging as well as tee shirts. The design was part of a series of similarly illustrated works.

Part of a product packaging redesign. The target market was 11 year old boys with baseball fixations! When not actually playing ball, they played baseball video games. The images above are styled after figures one might see in popular video games.

Part of a series for a natural history museum featuring plants and animals indigenous to the midwestern states. These images were printed on kraft paper labels and applied to gift boxes and bags.
Education brochure cover illustrations - pen & ink
Two examples from a series of covers illustrated for a the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. These images were reproduced on the covers of the quarterly education brochures. Once again, accuracy was important in the rendering of the animals as this audience would spot a mistake immediately.
